My emphasis is representing clients in federal and state criminal matters, but I also dedicate a significant portion of my practice to general civil areas much of which involves probate and administrative proceedings, including the defense of professional licenses, such as for nurses and attorneys, obtaining driving privileges after a suspension or revocation, and unemployment benefit hearings. Prior to this, much of my work was in domestic relations.
How has your practice evolved in the last few years?
One practice I have more recently expanded is flat fee billing, and in my opinion, it will only continue to gain traction in the legal profession. The billable hour isn’t necessarily as conducive to efficiency. Many of our clients opt for a flat fee because of the certainty and value it guarantees upfront. I anticipate due to the intense and increasing competition that the profession will see an increased demand for this type of fee structure over the next few years.
If you could offer one piece of advice for young lawyers, what would it be?
Zealously guard your credibility, and treat everyone as you wish to be treated. When you showcase respect and a courteous manner to others, it will get noticed. Likewise, don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek assistance from other attorneys. We’ve all been in your shoes before, and can relate to what you’re going through.
What’s one technological device, application or tool you could not function without?
The free Dragon dictation app. It’s much more accurate than any other native voice recognition apps that I am aware of. I’ve found it to be most valuable for situations where I am on the go, so for example, when I am walking out of court or headed to a meeting. There it’s convenient for when I’m sending an email or text to staff or even myself as I think of it. But it also works well for dictating longer documents wherever I am. From my experience, the tablet version provides increased functionality.
How has civility made a difference in your practice of law?
Years ago, a very experienced and old-school gentleman lawyer represented the opposing parties in some very difficult litigation. Although his clients were emotionally involved and prone to lashing out at almost anyone when given the opportunity, none of their behaviors affected his manner in the slightest. I was impressed and became friendly with him, going to him for advice on some tough matters here and there as a result. Frankly I was in awe of time and effort he invested in advising and reassuring me, when he didn’t have to give me any guidance whatsoever. In my eyes, he seemed to epitomize the civil professional, and that was something I sought to implement in my own practice.
What do you do for fun?
I love spending time with my children. We love being outdoors and travel. We’ll fish, boat, fly, hike, bike, and play baseball and basketball. However, when I’m not spending quality time with them, I enjoy cooking, especially smoking meats, and shooting outdoor photography in my spare time.
