The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism is pleased to announce that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Manager Kendra Abercrombie will present at the inaugural Future Legal Eagles Flight School, a national pre-law summit for Black youth and their parents. The free virtual event will be held from Friday, July 30 through Sunday, August 1 and requires registration.
Future Legal Eagles Flight School was created by Evangeline M. Mitchell, founder of the National Pre-Law Diversity Initiatives, to encourage elementary through high school students to explore a career in the law and to expose them to real-life Black lawyer role models.
Abercrombie will present “How to Read and Brief a Legal Case” on Friday, July 30, as part of the “Flight Class” series. During the session, Abercrombie will teach students how to read a case law that they will have to study in law school.
Additional summit speakers include the Hon. J. Machelle Sweeting, Acting Justice for the New York State Supreme Court; Antonette N. Smith, Executive Director of Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization based in Chicago; and Tricia “CK” Hoffler, Past President of the National Bar Association and CEO of The CK Hoffler Firm, among others.
“Black Americans make up only 5% of lawyers and approximately 8% of law students. To support the pipeline of diverse attorneys, it’s important to expose our future lawyers to the information, opportunities, and mentors they need early on,” Abercrombie said. “I’m thrilled to have the chance to connect with these young people and their parents, and to share some insight into what they can expect from an exciting career in the law.”
