The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism is pleased to announce that it has been named a finalist for the American Legal Technology Awards. The Commission has been recognized in the Court award category, which highlights an individual or organization that displays outstanding use of innovation that achieves a significant benefit to the courts.
“The Commission on Professionalism’s mission includes promoting professionalism in the judicial system to ensure it provides efficient and effective resolution of problems and disputes to the citizens of Illinois,” said Erika Harold, Executive Director of the Commission on Professionalism. “We are thrilled to be recognized for our work with the courts and grateful that the Illinois Supreme Court has had the foresight to prioritize technology and innovation in our court system, which enables us to make a substantial impact on our goals.”
The American Legal Technology Awards recognize excellence in creative innovation and technology in the legal industry for the purposes of (1) expanding understanding of what is possible, (2) encouraging a virtuous cycle of improvement, and (3) creating a more just society. Other award categories include Access to Justice, Enterprise, Individual, Law Department, Law Firm, Startup, and Technology.
Winners in each of the categories will be announced at a gala dinner on October 9, in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Awards were founded by Cat Moon, Director of Innovation Design for the Program on Law & Innovation at Vanderbilt Law School, Patrick Palace, owner of Palace Law and an ABA Center for Innovation board member, and Tom Martin, founder and CEO of LawDroid.
The Commission on Professionalism leverages technology to improve the delivery of professional responsibility CLE and judicial programming in Illinois, and to administer an online mentoring program. In addition, the Commission teaches judges, lawyers, and law students how to use technology civilly and ethically through its active blog, social media platforms, media placements, and online educational events.
Through its unique “A Walk in Their Shoes: Courthouse Professionalism Training” program, the Commission works with courthouse leadership to customize a cross-disciplinary seminar that addresses the professionalism challenges identified as most important by the courthouse working community. As a result, courthouse personnel better understand the connection between professionalism and the delivery of justice and learn to apply strategies to improve court users’ experience with the justice system.
The Commission also brings groundbreaking thinking on legal and judicial professionalism and innovation from around the globe to the judges and lawyers of Illinois through its annual The Future Is Now: Legal Services conference, which attracts hundreds of attendees each year.
